In addition, he earned his Ph.D. in Biblical Studies and ancient Near East from Ben-Gurion University in Beer Sheba (Dissertation: “Political Assassination in Ancient Near East”).

Ilan wrote two books: “The Deputy of Bar Kochva - Number Two in History” and “Political Assassinations in the Bible and Ancient Near East”.  His third book titled  “The counsel of Ahithophel: the debates in the Bible” is about to be published.

ABOUT Dr. Avi Shilon

Avi Shilon is a historian of Israel and Zionism. He is the author of Menachem Begin: A Life (Yale University press). His second book was Ben Gurion: His Later Years in the Political Wilderness (Rowman and Littlefield, 2016) and his new book, The Decline of the Left-wing in Israel was published by I.B. Tauris recently.  Shilon was a visiting scholar at NYU in the past 3 years and he is currently working at the Tel Hai Academic College in Israel. He also writes op-ed columns for Haaretz.

ABOUT DR. ILAN ABECASSIS

Ilan Abecassis lives in Israel and has been immersing himself in the wonders of the Bible since his days in high school. Ilan is a Biblical and Ancient Near East historian, a writer, a lecturer, a podcaster and a licensed tour guide.

Ilan holds a B.A. in Archaeology and Biblical Studies and a M.A. in Biblical studies from the Hebrew university of Jerusalem (Thesis: “Mercenaries in Israel in Biblical Times”). In addition, he earned his Ph.D. in Biblical Studies and ancient Near East from Ben-Gurion University in Beer Sheba (Dissertation: “Political Assassination in Ancient Near East”).

Ilan wrote two books: “The Deputy of Bar Kochva - Number Two in History” and “Political Assassinations in the Bible and Ancient Near East”.  His third book titled  “The counsel of Ahithophel: the debates in the Bible” is about to be published.

We will examine (In HEBREW) how Israeli men are portrayed in such popular Israeli TV series as Fauda, Shtisel, and When Heroes Fly, and explore how these portrayals could serve as a lens through which we explore Israeli society and the Zionist endeavor more broadly.

ABOUT ILAN VITEMBERG

Ilan was born and raised in Israel (Kibbutz Megiddo).  He graduated (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of the District of Columbia, with a degree in Theatre Arts, focusing on the use of drama in informal education. 

For the past 20 years he has been working with children, teens and adults, both as a formal and an informal teacher.  In 1999, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he immersed himself in finding new, creative ways to teach about Judaism, Israel and the Hebrew language to all ages. 

Between 2002 and 2006, he was the director of the Diller Teen Fellows program and a Teen Program Consultant at the Bureau of Jewish Education in San Francisco and then became the Director of the Israel Education Initiative and Director of Education Support Services at the Jewish Learning Works. 

Currently, he is an independent educational consultant and an Israel Education consultant at the Palo Alto Jewish Community Center.  He lives in Oakland, CA with his husband Peter with whom he also acts and performs as a member of the Up A Tree Puppetry duo.
